My first week of learning MDX comes to its end. Sometimes i think i understand everything about it but the next moment when i should write a query it´s very difficult to begin. I guess i need more training, which i will get the next two weeks.
This day i have started with the aggregates function avg and also repeated stuff i´ve been doing this week. When i am learning MDX i first read this book and then do the examples, then i try to do the same with the ERP-system i am working on. Many times it´s difficult because it´s totally different built. The example cube that comes with the book is easy to understand with lots of user-defined hierarchies. In the other cubes (four of them) there are something like 400 tables but only one or two user-hierarchies. The names are “bad” if you compare them as well but i guess i can live with that. It also lack some data (it´s a demo-version) so i have to rely on the (step-by-step) cube many times to learn the queries. Two other helpful tools i use are the forums on stackoverflow & msdn. I am usually posting at least one question per day.
Next week i will continue with time-dimensions & different comparisons.
