Overview MDX

First session with MDX. I am using the “Microsoft Press: Microsoft SQL Server 2008 MDX Step by Step” by Bryan C.Smith. First chapter was a quick tour on the dimensional model and differences between storage on relational data warehouse and multidimensional DW. I knew most of it but what i learned was:
The dimensions in the cube consists of attribute-hierarchies which are used when slicing and dicing (filtered & grouped) and properties which provide supplemental information or filter other attributes.
The attribute-hierarchy is a two level hierarchy which includes bottom(leaf-level) and top-level(All-member). I also saw a great distinction between SQL and MDX:
SQL – Assemble sets of data.
MDX – Assemble tuples identifying points of data within an n-dimensional space. A thing a take with me is that the two language are two completely different ways of querying data.
